I have the absolute pleasure of welcoming indie author, LJ Ross to Creating Perfection today as she shares her self-publishing journey.
Who are you and when did your journey begin?
I write under the pen name L J Ross and my journey with self-publishing really began on 1 January 2015, when I clicked ‘publish’ on the Kindle Direct Publishing platform and released my first book, Holy Island, into the world. I had no idea that it would go on to become a UK and international #1 bestseller.
Tell us about where you are on your self-publishing journey right now in terms of books publish, where you publish etc.
I’ve been self-publishing for three years and have published seven books with more in the pipeline. Three of them have been UK #1 bestsellers and the rest have reached the top three. Audible Studios have created the audiobook versions of six books with a seventh in production.
Why did you choose to self-publish?
I was offered a mid-range ‘traditional’ publishing deal but turned it down in favour of self-publishing. It offers a risk-free scenario where you retain creative and economic control of your own work. It falls upon you to make sure the book is edited, proofed, designed, and marketed in a quality fashion but I’m not afraid of that kind of independence – in fact, I thrive on it.
What’s the best thing about self-publishing?
Being your own boss and bucking the establishment!
And the worst?
I can’t think of one, unless you count having to field some outdated opinions about self-publishing from time to time.
What do you know now that you wish you’d known before you published your first book?
I wish I’d known how liberating it would be. I might have quit my old job sooner…
If you could change one thing about your self-publishing journey, what would it be and why?
I wouldn’t change a thing. I consider myself a very lucky woman!
Do you have any advice for those who might be looking in to self-publishing?
Be brave, be persistent and give it a go. You’ve nothing to lose!
Anything else you’d like to share?
The only other thing to say is that success is never achieved alone. I owe a debt of gratitude to all my family and friends, to every blogger, bibliophile and kind reader who has enjoyed my stories, as well as the innovators who made it all possible. Thank you!!
